Irish in Local Development

Apps that build their Irish in download it from the editor before every build, including the local dev server. You don't need to do anything to see Irish locally.

How it works locally

  • Starting the dev server downloads the Irish for your branch into a generated file that is gitignored. Never commit it.
  • Which branch's Irish: usually the branch you have checked out, if the editor watches it, or the app's development branch otherwise. Most apps let you pick another branch with an environment variable.
  • Refreshing: to get the latest Irish without restarting, run the app's refresh command.
  • If the editor can't be reached, the dev server keeps your last copy, or shows English the first time. Local development never breaks because of the editor.

The exact commands are in each app's README, under Translations.

Testing your strings in Irish

  1. Add your English and push to a watched branch, so it reaches the editor.
  2. Translate it in the editor, or ask a translator to.
  3. Refresh the Irish locally.

Strings that aren't translated yet show in English in the Irish version of the app. That is expected.

Deploys

In a deploy, the build should fail if it can't get the Irish, rather than ship a site without Irish. The live site stays as it was. Run the deploy again once the editor is reachable.
